After just a year in business, Pedal City is parking its business on wheels at its new bar and beer garden located downtown at 1215 W. Main St. With its gargantuan 13-person pedal cart, Pedal City made a huge impression downtown during the summer of 2014 as residents saw the towering bike traveling down the streets.
The cart is hard to miss. At 17 feet long, 91/2 feet tall and 800 pounds, the 10-person-powered cart can really haul. From Three Rivers Festival events to wedding parties, Pedal City was booked most of the summer.
When co-owners Adam Murphy and Janelle Ford saw the huge spike in business after just one year, they also saw opportunity, which is why they decided to find a home for the carts and create a downtown spot to enjoy a drink.
The bar has been open for a few weeks now, giving the owners a chance to test the waters, but the new space is officially celebrating its grand opening noon to midnight Saturday with live music, drink specials, and plenty of room in the indoor dining area and outdoor beer garden fit with games such as table tennis, cornhole and foosball.
Pedal City now serves its own food and alcohol, including 30 craft beers and 20 other selections. It also welcomes area food trucks.
Ford hopes the location will attract bicyclists from the Rivergreenway and bring more people to a less developed area of downtown just over the West Main Street bridge.
While the owners said the establishment is for the 21-and-older crowd, they hope to make it family-friendly down the road.
The interior is dark with a modern, big-city look featuring stainless steel, black and gray accented with original artwork, thanks to Murphy’s other personal talent, photography. The outdoor beer garden is bright and cheery with sun-kissed yellows and neon greens. Both inside and outside areas provide plenty of open seating. A popular downtown design feature, a garage door with a window is the only barrier from the indoor and outdoor seating areas, making a very open floor plan and flow for bar-goers.
Pedal City hopes to become a regular community gathering space by holding special events to entertain customers such as cornhole and table tennis.
Pedal City will also rent Surrey bikes later this year, which are two- or four-person pedal bikes with covered tops for group outings. It also has a special bike where you can churn your own ice cream.
