Fort Wayne Rescue Mission prepares for freezing temps
Though it's an ongoing practice to open its east lobby as a warming center to help shelter men when temperatures are below 40 degrees, the shelter is prepared to open its dining area, chapel, lobby and occasional office space to help the homeless during extreme cold snaps, according to the Rev. Donovan Coley, CEO and senior pastor. The Rescue Mission normally has a capacity to shelter 50 men, but has been proactive in purchasing additional cots. "We never shut down," he said. "We were the only ones open last year during the ice storm." Coley said the frigid temperatures are a "blessing in disguise," because it makes the homeless think about their circumstances, making them a captive audience for the staff who connect them to resources to help them gain shelter. "It's a chance to connect them to resources to rethink their sleeping arrangements," he said. Coley said 200 of the 500 emergency beds in Fort Wayne are at the Rescue Mission, though it can shelter as many as 250 homeless, if needed. Coley also said Charis House, which houses women and children, is prepared to take as many as 78. skrieg@news-sentinel.com X |
