PEWS AND POLITICS FORUM IN APRIL 2015

A LOT HAPPENS IN CAMPAINGS; AND THEN  GETS REVIEWEDNA D RE HASHED.
THIS INTERESTING TID-BIT:

Roach – He was actually berating Mayor Henry before the
forum about releasing his tax returns and the river quality reports. He brought
up some good points, and if it wasn’t for his unprofessional delivery (during
forum said something about “rednecks” and powerball tickets, and before the
forum Republican Lee Bradley even said he felt uncomfortable by his Tom Henry
barrage),
he would probably get somewhere with it.

INTERESTING COMMENT:

Churches, and all 501(c)(3) organizations for that matter, can host political forums as long as it is determined that the forum is not partisan in nature. Similarly, 501(c)(3) organizations can host 'get out the vote' drives as long as they don't make preferences for who you should vote for. If you see a 501(c)(3) organization officially making a preference toward a particular candidate/political party, they are violating IRS rules and could actually have their tax-exempt status revoked.

Although, if I remember, the IRS has been kind of lax on the enforcement of rules regarding the political activities of 501(c)(3) organizations since the scandal a while back involving the discrimination against tea-party groups by the IRS commissioner. Hope I answered your question!

Stevenson actually did well in the forum (Mitch Harper even said he agreed with one thing he said. Henry was definitely on the hot seat.). If you weren't aware of that comment a few weeks back and the position of the fraternal order of police, you would expect him to be a serious contender. He is actually quite witty (Even Mayor Henry laughed when they asked for his plans to improve downtown and he spelled Stevenson "S-t-e....""; Alyssa Iverson asked if that was his entire answer and he said yes.). Even Journal Gazette could only fault him in two areas in its opinion editorial "Clear choices in mayor race" 2 days ago.
