Election Board to review 10 ballot challenges
The Allen County Election Board will meet Wednesday to consider efforts to remove 10 candidates from the May 5 primary ballot -- nine of the challenges filed by a perennial candidate seeking the Democratic nomination for mayor.
In the only challenge not filed by David C. Roach, Wayne Township Assessor Bev Zuber, on behalf of the Allen County Democrat Party, is seeking Brian Thornton's removal as a Democratic candidate for city clerk on the basis that he does not comply with election requirements because he has never voted Democratic in previous primaries and did not receive certification from party Chairman John Court before filing for office.
Current Deputy Clerk Angie Davis is also seeking the Democratic nomination for clerk. Thornton said he has voted Democrat in at least one primary and that he will fight to remain on the ballot.
Roach, who has unsuccessfully sought numerous offices in the past -- he received 30 percent of the vote as the Democratic sheriff candidate last year -- has made various allegations in challenging the candidacy of Mayor Tom Henry and eight others: Democratic mayoral candidates John Roberson and Rick Stevenson; Republican mayoral candidate Bill Collins; Democrat City Council at-large candidates Dan Lobdell, Kevin Brown and Tommy Schrader; Democrat 4th District Council candidate and current Safety Director Rusty York and Democrat mayoral candidate Tom Cook.
The meeting will be at noon Wednesday in Room 419 of the Rousseau Center, 1 E. Main St.
